‘Martian’ still frying ‘Pan’ at the weekend box office

IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY - 10/10/2015 08:53:00 AM
Hook and Peter Pan, previous feature adaptations of J.M. Barrie’s novel, received  A-s, but this Joe Wright origins-take on the material from Jason Fuchs’ 2013 Black List script pulled in a B+ CinemaScore.

PostTrak shows that 78% of the audience said Pan was excellent or very good. It would be nice if these were promising signs for Pan in the long run; instead, it carries a 22% Rotten Tomatoes score. If reviews had been better for Pan, that might have helped drive business, given Wright’s Oscar-ish resume at the arthouse.

Rentrak’s PostTrak reports that largely older females are turning up for the film respectively at 57% and 58% over 25. However, this appears to be the Hugh Jackman fan club outnumbering moms at the cinema, since only 3% of the audience was under 12.

Warner Bros. has turned its marketing machine on full blast for Pan from set pieces and stunts around the globe to Rooney Mara (Tiger Lily) and Levi Miller working down to the wire with appearances on the Today show Friday morning. However, the press has been shooting flaming arrows at Pan for quite some time.

‘Blindspot’ Gets Full-Season Order

IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY - 10/10/2015 08:50:00 AM
NBC’s Blindspot, already the fall season’s top-rated new series in adults 18-49, has become the first freshman series to get a Back 9 pickup, bringing its first-season order to a full-season 22 episodes.

The order follows the network’s recent pickup of nine backup scripts for the thriller about a woman with no memories whose tattooed body holds the key to her past and to a vast and complex mystery.

Through three weeks, Blindspot has averaged a 2.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 9.6 million viewers overall in Live+Same Day. The show’s first two telecasts each have grown by 4.6 million viewers in Live+3, in both cases the biggest increases for those weeks among all broadcast and cable programs.

Blindspot, from Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Prods., stars Sullivan Stapleton, Jaimie Alexander, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Rob Brown, Audrey Esparza, Ukweli Roach and Ashley Johnson. Creator and writer Martin Gero serves as executive producer along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Mark Pellington and Marcos Siega. Pellington directed the pilot episode.

'Hawaii Five-0' fan recap: Put a ring on it

IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY - 10/10/2015 02:34:00 AM
In our latest episode, basically everyone gets screen time and subplots. And both Steve and Danny were shirtless at some point. It’s the Hawaii Five-0 trifecta! So let’s break it down now, shall we?

Jerry moved into his new office in the subbasement of Five-0 HQ. He complains a little that he’s not sitting upstairs with the rest of the gang, but he’s happy to be an official “special consultant” with Five-0, business cards and all. I still am a little unsure what role he’s serving here, but hey, what do I know?

Danny’s nephew, Eric Russo (Andrew Lawrence), is back! You might remember him from episode 12 of season 3, when he was sent to Hawaii so Danny can straighten him out. (This is also the episode in which Steve and Danny are mistaken for a sorority sister’s two gay dads.)

Eric is starting a job at the crime lab. He’s got the science part down, but Uncle D still has to teach him important lessons like “less caffeine,” “tone down the misogyny,” and don’t refer to murder victims as “clubbed baby seals.” It’s his first day. He’s learning.

'Criminal Minds' fan recap: Lust, revenge, and a chemical killer

IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY - 10/10/2015 02:29:00 AM
Terrorism always brings a special brand of creepiness to any show I’m watching. I’ll probably never be in a gun battle or a car chase. But I could be sitting in an office building when a bomb goes off. It’s a fear that sneaks into everyday life. In this episode of Criminal Minds, a gas attack on a bus leads to a web of lies, lust, and old-fashioned revenge.

We open with a man hurriedly digging a hole with a body next to him. Hey, it’s Criminal Minds. Nothing new to us!

Charles takes a long, dangerous ride in season 11, episode 2 of Criminal Minds.

Cut to the same man in his car, listening to morning radio. After cleaning his shoes with some bottled water, his boss calls asking where he is. The fella seems dejected, and after some back and forth, we learn his boss is also his wife. It’s clear that marital issues are leaking into their work life.

After the conversation, our possible unsub looks up and sees his bus fly by. A few minutes later, the same bus wildly careens into a group of waiting passengers. Someone walks into the bus and discovers everyone on board is dead!
